Annals of Bridlington - One of four brothers on foreign soil. On Wednesday, Mrs G. H. Jordan
received the following letter announcing the death of her husband,
February 12, 1916. Dear Mrs Jordan - I am very grieved indeed to have to send you the very sad news that your husband was killed by a
shell while with the Transport on their way to the trenches last night. His comrades and I buried him with the full burial service in the
military cemetery just outside this afternoon, and a cross will be erected to mark the grave.
Please accept my very real sympathy with you
in your great sorrow and loss. Yours sincerely, Basil E. Keymer, Chaplain, 150th Brigade.
Pte Jordan is the son of Mr and Mrs Marmaduke Jordan of
Moorfield Road, Bridlington. Three of his brothers are on foreign service.”

1501 Pte Foxton James. Son of James and Ann Foxton of Kirby Misperton Lane, Pickering, N Yorks. Born Kirby Misperton.

1978 L/Cpl Gillyon Thomas Edward. Home at 39 Minster Moorgate, Beverley. Born Beverley. Enlisted Bridlington.
Killed in action on the 2nd March 1916 aged 18. Commemorated at Maple Copse Cemetery.
Lt Spofforth Edward Reginald The only son of Mrs Spofforth of Granville Rd, Scarborough. Born 15 January 1891 at York,
Educated at Oundle. He went to France when the Battalion first went on 18 April 1915 and took part in Second Ypres.
A short time later he suffered and attack of Scarlet Fever and was invalided back to the UK. He returned to France in January 1916 and on this
day he was wounded by a trench mortar and died within an hour, aged 24.
Buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery.

28th - Marched with 150th Inf Bde to Canadian Divisional Rest Area No 2. Billets between Meteren Shaeken and Bailleul. In Corps
Reserve to Canadian Corps at these billets until 1st April.

The Battalion moved from the trenches in Armagh Wood on 28th March and via Dickebusch, Meteren,
Bailleul and Locre ended up on the 1st April taking over trenches in front of Kemmel.

APRIL.
1st - Battalion marched from Canadian Rest Area No 2 to Locre, where it bivouacked during the day. In the evening moved to
Kemmel Shelters, where stayed until 7th.
3rd - Casualties 3 OR wounded, including 2 OR wounded and at duty.
4th - In Kemmel Shelters supplying working parties for trenches.
5th - 1 OR wounded on working party.
7th - Battalion relieved 4th East Yorks Bn in E1 to E3, E6, F2 to F5. HQ at Lindenhoek. 24 Division on Right and 5th DLI on Left.
In this position until 15th.

1265 Pte Sollitt Willsey. Third son of Mr and Mrs T. J. Sollitt of 101 Hilderthorpe Road, Bridlington. Born in York.
Killed in action on the 13th April 1916. Buried in Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery.
Annals of Bridlington - This brave young soldier was formerly in the employ of the N.E. Railway Company at Hull, and when he was
leaving to fight for his King and country, his foreman said: ‘All right, Sollitt, the place will be ready for you when you come back.’
Like many other Bridlington men, he went out to the front last April and has since seen a good deal of hard fighting. He was a single
young man, but it was his intention to have been married when he got his leave from the trenches. His two brothers are both in the Army;
one of them being now in hospital recovering from wounds. A letter from Major Purvis to his parents is full of sympathy and high esteem
for the young soldier, who met his death by the explosion of an enemy shell whilst carrying a message.

15th - Battalion relieved by 4th East Yorks Bn and moved into Divisional Reserve at Badajoz Huts, Locre.
3406 Pte Timbs Richard Home at Yapham and enlisted Pocklington. Died of wounds on the 15th April 1916.

16th to 21st - Battalion at Locre supplying working parties for trenches.
22nd - Relieved 4th East Yorks in same trenches as on 7th. 1 OR wounded.
23rd - 5 ORs wounded.
24th - 1 OR killed and 7 wounded.
3662 Pte Pickup Ephraim Henry. Enlisted Scarborough. Killed in action on the 24th April 1916.
Commemorated at Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery.
25th - 1 OR wounded.
26th - Very quiet day. About 6.30 pm two Poles of 212 Reserve Regt gave themselves up to C Company in E1 trench.
They informed us that a German gas attack was imminent, a fact which we already know. 2nd Lt EM Robson wounded.
27th - Battalion "stood to" all night. 1 OR wounded.

28th - Relieved by 10 R W Fusiliers [3rd Division, 70 Infantry Brigade] and went into Bde Reserve in Kemmel Shelster. 1 OR
wounded.
68 Bandsman Parkinson Allan. Home at 32 St Marys Walk, Scarborough. Born and enlisted Scarborough.
Died of wounds on the 28th April 1916 aged 21. Commemorated at Etaples Cemetery. Hospital.
He had two brothers who also served in the 5th Battalion, Charles and Simpson. Allan was a stretcher bearer and had suffered gunshot wounds to
the right arm, right leg and compound fracture to the buttocks while in the Ypres area.
29th - Relieved at 12 noon by 2nd Suffolks [70 Infantry Bde] and proceeded to Eecre [via Locre, Bailleul and Fletre]. In
5th Corps Reserve.
30th - Battalion ordered to stand to at 3.0 am owing to gas attack on 3rd and 24 Division. Ready to move at 1 hours notice till
10 am, when normal conditions were returned.
