Wife of Pte James Castle of Northallerton received 37 shillings and elevenpence for herself and five children after her husband was killed on 27 May 1918. He served for a year with the 4th Yorks before being transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. It is difficult to state the equivalent modern value. Using the Retail Price Index in 2009 it would have been only £64.60. Using Average Earnings it would have been £296.00.
