4th - Arrived at 8.30 am at Hangest sur Somme. Marched to Metigny, where arrived 2.30 pm and billeted. Remained training there
until 12th.
11th - Inspection of Bde by GOC 50th Div and presentation of decorations. Sgt C Spivey received Bar to DCM.
12th - Marched to Caumont and billeted there until 19th.

2nd Lt Jennings William. Home at 254 Linthorpe Rd, Middlesbrough where he was born in 1896.
His father, William, a Customs Officer had died in 1910.
Commissioned from the ranks of the Yorkshire Regiment. He had been badly wounded sometime during this German offensive of 27th May 1918 and
died of these wounds nearly 3 months later on the 31th July 1918, aged 23. Commemorated at Beaurepaire French National Cemetery Pontavert.
His mother, Fanny Jennings, listed as widow and Boarding House Keeper, had received more
tragic news just a week earlier.
William's brother Robert was killed in a flying accident in the UK.
Robert had enlisted on 8th May 1916 and served as Private 59634 with the 3rd Battalion Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)
before transferring to the newly formed Royal Air Force.

At 6.20 am on the on 24 July 1918 Cadet Robert and Captain Malcome Macay Macleod took to the Sky in a D.H.6 At Withering Aerodrome near
Stamford Lincs to Practice formation Flying with 2nd Lieut W N Miles in a second D.H.6. At about 7.15 the Planes were gliding down
towards the Aerodrome to land. The second D.H.6 piloted by W N Miles overtook the first D.H.6 and collided with it about 200 feet from
the ground , Both Planes crashed to the ground The planes were totally wrecked.
Robert, aged 20, Capt Macleod and 2nd Lieut W N Miles were all Killed in the Incident.
He was buried in North Ormesby [St Joseph's] Roman Catholic Cemetery, Middlesbrough, N Yorks, where a memorial to both brothers still
stands.

Major Palliser John Silvester. Home at Brentwood, Flamborough, Bridlington, Born at Rotherham.
Commissioned from the ranks of the Yorkshire Regiment. He had been in the TF since 1911 and went with the 5th Battn to France in
1915 as a L/Cpl in the Signal Section. After 10 weeks at Ypres he was recommended for a Commission and sent home for training.
He returned to France as 2nd in Command of a Company in the Machine Gun Corps. He had been involved in fighting at Arras, Bullercourt and
Passchendaele and was promoted to Captain in September 1917 as CO of a Company and made Major on the 1st March 1918 whilst home on leave.

2nd Lt Humphrey Richard Ronald. Home at 19 South Parade, Gainsborough, Lincs. Prior to the War he was a
Chief clerk with Bridlington Town Hall. He had served in the ranks of
the Kings Royal Rifle Corps before being commissioned into the 5th on the 25th Jan 1917.
A local paper reported in April 1917 that he
had been wounded by shrapnel in his Right arm and spent several months in Hospital.
He was serving with another Unit at his death.
He had initially been listed missing in action, but several months later his family received notice from his CO that he had been part
of a 5 man patrol & had been wounded by enemy action, last seen crawling for cover. His body was found at the beginning of the British
advance but due to its state was buried immediately. Following the Armistice his remains were found once more by CSM Herbert Hey of 23
POW Company who was able to identify his body by his engraved ring & his id disc. He was also able to confirm that he had been killed
by gunfire. He then had the German POW under his command bury the body. He wrote a letter describing his actions to Humphrey's parents
& it was published in the Bridlington Press of 23 May 1919.
Killed in action on the 31st August 1918 aged 27. Commemorated at Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux en Gohelle.

reduced to Cadre force in June 1918.

1955 Pte Jennison Leonard. Home at Fairfield Rd Bridlington. One of two brothers who served in the 5th
Battn from first going to France in April 1915, having enlisted in August 1914.
His brother Fred's fascinating story is given on the page for 29th May 1918. His life was saved in 1915 by a bullet lodging in a Bible and
in 1918 he was, it seems, mistakenly reported killed in action.
According to the Bridlington Annals After two years Leonard was "invalided to an Irish Hospital suffering from Trench foot, having spent
the last 4 months in the line at the Somme." [The 5th Battn's operations began there in September 1916.] He was later transferred to
the 1st Yorks Battn. This Unit spent the whole war in India. Leonard died there on the 30 October 1918 of Influenza. He is
commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

Lt Majolier Edward. Date of birth: 12 May 1888. Died of Pneumonia at home on the 26th, aged 30. He went out to France when the Battalion first went on 18th April 1915, leading the advance Party and fought at Second Ypres.
Death registered at St Georges, Hanover Sq, London. Place of burial not known.
He was a awarded a Silver War Badge for the wounded in November 1917
Edouard was the elder son of Edouard Majolier, of Huguenot descent, and his wife, Suzanne. Edouard Senior was a Corn Broker and Factor. The family lived at 20 Bramham Gardens, Earls Court and had two sons and four daughters.
Edouard was educated at Eton and went up to Christ Church in 1907. The following year, in which his father died, he rowed in the College Eight in the Grand Challenge Cup.
In 1910, he was in the University Eight which won the Boat Race. His weight was 13 stone and half a pound.
In 1911, he was living at 20 Bramham Gardens and described as a Cornbroker’s Clerk. At the outbreak of war, he was commissioned Lieutenant in the 5th Yorkshire Regiment.
In the spring of 1916, he married Geraldine Briggs at Atcham. They had two daughters, Chloe born in 1917 and Peggy born in the summer of 1918.
Probate was granted to a chartered accountant. He left £16,100-0s-1d.
His photograph has Hull R.F.C under his name.

Died of wounds on the 23rd July 1919. Ex 160266 Royal Field Artillery. Commemorated at Cae Athraw Calvinistic Methodist Chapelyard.

1269/240125 Pte Clark William. B Company. Wounded at the Battle of Morval on the Somme, on about the 29th September 1916 and after treatment in the UK was discharged with Silver War Badge on the 16th May 1917. Died of exhaustion from "Mania" in Hul City Mental Hospital on the 17th December 1928, aged 34. Buried in Western Cemetery, Kingston upon Hull.
