240165 Pte Gray William Henry. Born and enlisted at Bridlington. He had been in the Territorial Force prior to
the War and had worked for Gray and Sons, Coal Merchants of Bridlington. He had been wounded at Ypres in 1915 and a "further three
times, always in the thigh or leg". At the end of the fighting on the Somme on the small tributary of that river, the Ancre, he was
seriously wounded with an arm and both legs being fractured. Although his family received a letter from a Chaplain stating that he
was "going well and cheerful" he died of his wounds on the 11th March 1917 aged 21. Commemorated at Etaples Cemetery. Hospital.

At 4.45 am the Battalion moved up in support to the 4th East Yorks Bn, who were attacking. Reinforcements were supplied during the
advance, and the whole Battalion was brought up to meet the counter attack, which had succeeded in forcing back our troops to their
original front line.

Here the Battalion held the line until 6.0 pm, when a second attack was launched in conjunction with 2 Battalions
of the 151st Bde.
This attack was successful and the line gained was held all night.
Casualties. 3 Officers and 15 OR killed. 5 Officers and 118 OR wounded. 2 Officers and 55 OR missing. 1 OR died of wounds.

Annals of Bridlington - Wounded five times. Mrs Leonard, has received notification that her son, has been reported as wounded
and missing since April 23 last. The Battalion was in action. His Captain was killed and other Officers were wounded or are missing.
No further particulars are forthcoming.

Germans quit Trenches.
|
Pte Leonard had been in several stiff engagements, and had previously
been wounded on four occasions, besides contracting trench fever. On the first occasion he was wounded by shrapnel in the
right shoulder, next by a bullet in the foot, and on the other occasions received wounds in the face and in the head.
Previous to enlistment he had for a time been in the employment of Cllr Gant, builder, and the Bridlington Gas Company, and for some years
had been a popular member of the Bridlington Excelsior Band. He enlisted in August 1914, and went out with his
regiment early in 1915. The last time he was in Bridlington was about nine months since on leave.
Sixth wound proves fatal - Mrs Leonard, 122 St John Street, has received official news that her son, Pte J. W. Leonard, was posted as
wounded and missing on April 23, 1917, and has now been reported killed.

Capt Vause Wilfrid. M.C. Home at High Stakeby nr Whitby, where he was born in 1889.
He was educated at Spring Hill School, Whitby and before the War worked for Beckett and Co's Bank in Pickering, N Yorks.
A pre-War Territorial he had been with the 5th Battn since April 1914. He had been wounded in late 1915 and rejoined in March 1916.
He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions on the Somme in 1916. The London Gazette citation read - For conspicuous
gallantry in action he led his Company with great courage and initiative, entering the enemy trench and holding it against counter
attacks. Later he organised a bombing attack and greatly assisted in the success of the operation."

Sgt George Claxton.

240542 Sgt Claxton George. Home at 4 St Mary’s Terrace, Bridlington. Eldest son of the late Mr S. and Mrs Claxton. Born Curragh,
Dublin. Died of pneumonia on the 11th May 1917 aged aged 22. Buried at Doullens Community Cemetery Extension.
Annals of Bridlington. A wire was received on Saturday night stating that he was dangerously ill in a French hospital, and on
Wednesday his mother received a letter from an army chaplain informing her that he died on Friday, the 4th inst.
Later in the day a further wire reached Mrs Claxton from the Territorial Record Office, York, confirming the news of her son’s death.
Enlisting shortly after war broke out, Sgt Claxton, who was 21 years of age, went abroad with the local Territorials two years ago.
After 12 months’ foreign service he sustained shell shock and was invalided to England.
He went out to France for the second time five months ago. He had gained all his stripes on the field. Before joining the army Sgt Claxton
was a gardener in the employment of Mrs Simpson, Quay Road. Mrs Claxton’s husband, who died two years ago, was himself an old soldier,
having served nineteen years with the colours, and took part in the Boer War.
Mrs Claxton received the following letter from Sgt C W Crosby of 14 Platoon.
Dear Mrs Claxton. It is with heartfelt sympathy that I write to inform you (as far as is possible for me to do so),
regarding the death
of your beloved son, George. He first commenced his illness on April 31[30?], and was removed to hospital on May 1,
afterwards being
moved to the Casualty Clearing Station, where he died the following day.

At the time of his illness we were behind the firing line for
a short rest, and up to the first day of his illness, he looked quite well, and was very cheerful. I can assure you that the news of
his death came to me, and the rest of his platoon quiet unexpectedly, and which gave us a great shock, as we fully expected seeing
him back with us in a few days’ time of his departure. I can say with confidence that he was very much appreciated by all of his
fellow NCOs and men in the platoon. Only a few days previous to his death he showed a fine example to all by the way he led his
platoon into a very heavy attack against the hated Hun. I trust that this little news will be of some consolation to you, and at the
same time I convey to you the deepest sympathy from all his comrades, also myself, as we all know that he died whilst serving his
King and country. Yours faithfully, etc.
