Between the 7th and 17th August 1916 the 5th Battalion moved from Kemmel to Millencourt, a village
just West of Albert in the Somme department.
They travelled by train from Bailleul to Doullens.
The rest was foot slogging by a roundabout route,
with terrible conditions at the Camps in between.

On the 10th Sep 1916 the 5th Yorks Battalion left Millencourt for the Trenches in front of Bazentin Le Petit.
The Battle of the Somme had been raging since the 1st July, when the front had been at the green line.
By the 31st August the Germans had been pushed back to the red line, but only at the expense of severe
losses.
The 50th Division had been ordered to take over the Front line to the North and North East of Bazentin Le Petit.
On the 15th of September the Battle of Flers-Courcelettes started with the Front shown by the blue line.

Pte Thomas Gray.

1258 Pte Gray Thomas H. Only son of Mrs Thomas Gray of 14 New Burlington Road. Born and lived at Bridlington,
killed in action on the 12th Sep 1916, aged 20. Buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz.
Annals of Bridlington -
Mrs Thomas Gray received official intimation on Sunday morning. The painful news was conveyed to the bereaved mother in the following letter
from France:
‘September 13, 1916. Dear Madam,
"It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son, No. 1258 Pte Thomas Gray, who was killed in action on the 12th
inst. I should like to express the sympathy of myself and his platoon commander and comrades with you in your bereavement. It will be some
comfort to you to know that your son died at his post with his face to the enemy, doing his duty as a soldier should. I need hardly add
that he will be missed by all his friends in the camp.
I am, dear madam, yours sincerely, E. M. Robson, Lieut."
The deceased soldier, who was well know in the town and district, was 20 years of age, and had been a member of the local Territorials
four and a half years.
He had been with the Regiment since the outbreak of war, and took part in that memorable weekend in April, 1915, when the Germans first
launched their gas attacks.

Battle of Flers-Courcelettes.
The orange area was the sector to be attacked by 150 Brigade.
The trenches between the French villages of Bazentin Le Petit and Martinpuich are shown as they were held before
the assault. Blue lines for British held and Red for German.
The 4th Yorks Btn in Eye Trench had 3 objectives as shown and reached the third, but at great expense.

He had seen since much hard fighting on the British front, and was slightly wounded
in the hand as recently as 24th July. Before mobilisation he was employed by the North Wastern Railway Company at Bridlington. Sympathy
will be felt for the bereaved relatives. The young soldier’s father, Pte Thomas Gray, is also serving his country, doing duty as a National
Reservist. He served through the Boer War.

Annals of Bridlington - Mrs Pickard has received news that her eldest son, Pte John Arthur Pickard, has been killed in action
during recent fighting at the front. The news was conveyed in a letter by the officer of his Company, which stated that the brave
young soldier, who is just over 19 years of age, was killed instantly by the explosion of a German shell

The letter also contained the following words: "Your son was well known throughout the Company as a good soldier, and he will be greatly
missed by all." Previous to enlistment, over a year ago, he was in the employ of Mr J. W. Allerston, hairdresser, and during training
was a drummer in the regimental band. He went out to the Front about two months ago.”

Pte Thomas William Sunley.

4137 Pte Sunley Thomas William. Home at Malpas Villa Malpas Rd Northallerton. Enlisted at Northallerton Yorks.
Died of wounds on the 14th September 1916 aged 19. Commemorated at Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery.
Thomas Sunley was born in Yafforth on 22nd March 1897 and his parents were called Alfred and Catherine. They then moved to Gladstone
Street in Northallerton, where they were living when he decided to join up with two of his friends who also worked in the North Eastern
Railway engine sheds, where he was employed as a fireman.
He was educated at the Northallerton National School on East Road and was a keen member of the Romanby Junior Football Club, with whom he
won medals in the Allertonshire League. He was also a keen woodcarver and made several small items which are still treasured by his family
today.
Private Sunley died as a result of wounds received on the Somme, six months after his 19th birthday. He is buried in Contalmaison Chateau
Cemetery in the village of Contalmaison. The cemetery stands in the grounds of the former chateau which was completely destroyed during
the War, but it's cellars were used by both the Germans and the Allies to shelter and treat their wounded.

The cemetery was begun by
fighting units on 14th July 1916 and it continued to be used by Field Ambulances from September 1916 to March 1917.
Thomas is also commemorated on the LNER Railway Memorial in York, which lists the names of all the staff of the LNER Company who
lost their lives in World War One.

Annals of Bridlington. - Pte H. Megson shot by sniper. It is with deep regret we have to record the
death in action of yet another Bridlington soldier. The deceased soldier was shot by a sniper whilst carrying messages from his company
to Battalion Headquarters. His Officer speaks highly of his devotion to duty.
Pte Megson was a member of the local Territorials for a number of years and went abroad in April 1915. He spent a few days home on leave
early in the year, and his death is deeply regretted by his Officers and comrades. He was a well-known footballer and had played in many
local football matches. The sympathy of his many friends, who knew him as a fearless and cheerful young soldier, will go out to his bereaved
father. His brother, Pte Harold Megson, West Yorks Regt, is on active service in France.”

Lt Col James Mortimer.

Lt Col Mortimer James. C.M.G. Home at Grove Cottage, Driffield, where he was born in 1870.
He first enlisted at the age of 17 in the 2nd Volunteer Battn of the East Yorks Regt and rose to command a Company during the Boer War.
At the start of the First World War he was a Major and Commanding Officer of the 5th Yorks and fought with them from the start in April
1915.
The comments in the Battn War Diary to this point are his. He won fame at the Battle of St Julien, Ypres, in the Battn's first
experience of fighting when he refused to retire as those about them were.
Afterwards he wrote home to his wife:-
"The Battalion has done splendidly. We were five days in the trenches and the men have stood it well and with great credit - such
trials as no Territorials have experienced as far as I know. All the time, five days, was spent under heavy Artillery and rifle fire
without a break. The Battalion was shelled very badly, but the men and Officers behaved very well."
He was hit by a shell this day as he approached the Assembly Trenches prior to zero hour for the attack.
A General wrote of him later:-
He was the soul of his Battalion, the pride of the Brigade and an example to us all."

His brother in law Capt Frank Woodcock was also killed this day.

“Annals of Bridlington - Miss Ethel Oliver, Scarborough Road, has received official notice that her brother, Pte J. Oliver, of the
Yorkshire Regiment, must be presumed dead. He was reported missing on September 15, 1916.
He was serving his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker with Messrs Wentworth and Son, Westgate,
when he enlisted in September 1914. He was drafted to France in April 1915, and had been in some stiff engagements during 17 months’
foreign service.

2nd Lt Phillips Guy Saggerson. Born Middlesbrough in 1882. Prior to the War he had been an analytical
chemist and had joined the Yorkshire Hussars as an other rank before being commissioned into the Yorkshire Regiment on the 2nd Sept
1915. Prior to the War he was a managing director of Theo Phillips and Son in Middlesbrough, a firm that manufactured oil and grease
products, having taken over on the death of his father. His brother 2nd Lt Frank Stewert Phillips was killed on the 23rd November 1917
while serving with the 13th Yorks Battalion. They both have family grave markers in Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough. Guy was killed in
action on the 15th September 1916 aged 34. He is buried in the Adanac Military Cemetery.

He had enlisted as a "boy soldier" and was wounded, aged 16yrs 9mths, at this time. After recovery in the UK he was transferred to the Highland Light Infantry and was taken prisoner in the German Spring offensives of March/April 1918. He survived the War and went on to serve in the Second World War in
the Royal Artillery, when this photograph was taken.

He had served with the Battalion from their first arrival in France. He sent a letter to his parents describing his first days at Ypres in
April 1915.
"We've had a rough five days in the trenches and are now out for a rest. War is terrible - dead horses, broken carts and wounded men
lying about everywhere. Alas, the worst sight is the poor refugees, with their bundles, trudging along the roads.
The country hereabouts is in a terrible state, all the roads being like ploughed fields. All the farms are practically destroyed and at
night the sky is lit up by burning buildings. At some of the farms the cattle have been left and you can see the poor things standing
looking at their broken down sheds.
The German Artillery is very heavy and they fire constantly. We of D Companyt were in two very tight corners, but I was fortunate
to come out without a scratch.

You have to be careful what you drink hereabouts because the water may be off. We've had a lot of German aeroplanes over us and
although fired upon by our lads I saw none brought down. I've lost a lot of weight marching about in the sun."

1323 Pte Ward Edward Sidney (Ted). Born in Leeds, lived in Bridlington, Died of wounds on the 19th Sep 1916. Buried at
Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz (moved from Bottom Wood Cemetery, Fricourt, after the Armistice.)
Annals of Bridlington - He died on September 19 from wounds received on the previous day. The deceased soldier was the nephew of Mrs Dove,
29 Cambridge Street, and had been brought up from early age by his grandmother, Mrs E. Ward, of Filey. Shortly before the outbreak of
war they came to reside in Bridlington, young Ward having secured a position at Messrs Ouston’s (grocers), King Street, Bridlington.
He had been a member of the Territorials from June 1912, and when war broke out he was called up and went abroad with the first
line in April 1915. He was seriously wounded by a bomb while helping to guard a trench on September 18 and, as stated, he died
the following day. Pte Ward was 20 years of age, and came of a fighting race, many of his ancestors having fought in the old
wars of the 19th century. His grandfather, who died a few years ago, was an ex-chief petty officer of the Royal Navy, and he
took part in the Baltic, the China, the Crimean and the New Zealand wars.”

He was the son of William (John) and the late Eleanor Wills (died 1895) and the husband of Margaret Hannah Willis (nee Foster)
later of Low Job Hill Crook Co Durham. The couple married in Middlesbrough in 1914. George can be found on the 1911 census residing with his Uncle and Aunt, Robert and Mary Willis at 16 Pembroke Street, Middlesbrough, N Yorks. He was employed as a joiner's labourer in a local ironworks.
He is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery Mericourt-L'Abby.

Mrs J. W. Smith, 142 Brookland Road, Bridlington. Killed in action on 25th October 1916. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Annals of Bridlington - He is officially reported to have fallen in action on October 25. Sgt Warley had served in France 19 months,
having enlisted in November 1914. He was 22 years of age, and had only recently been promoted on the field for gallant conduct. Previous
to joining the local Territorials, he was employed in the N.E.R. goods warehouse at Bridlington, and was also for a time with Messrs
Eastman Ltd, Bridlington. An Officer has tendered sympathy to the relatives on behalf of himself and Sgt Warley’s comrades.”
