14th JULY. Quiet day with slight trench mortaring and 1 other rank wounded.
3833 Pte Harris William. Home at Skelton in Cleveland. Died at home. Buried at
New Skelton Cemetery, N Yorks.
15th JULY. The whole line was subjected to a severe bombardment by Trench Mortars. Casualties were
2 other ranks and 5 wounded.
4584 Pte Carey Arthur. 1 Old Cottages, West Lane, Middlesbrough. Killed in action
Age 19. Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
5310 Pte Scuffham Joseph, Wright. Home at 50 Harker St, Skelton Green, N Yorks,
place of birth. Enlisted at Saltburn, N Yorks. Killed in action. Age 20. Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military.

2118 Pte Alderson Walter. Home in Brompton, N Yorks. Born Darlington.

5310 Private Joseph Wright Scuffham.
Killed, Age 20, on the 15th July 1916 by German Trench Mortars.
Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.

Enlisted at
Northallerton. Killed in action. Age 31. In a letter to Walter's family Major Charlton said that he had been "shot
through the neck and died almost immediately". Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
The following 3 men were killed in action, have no known grave and are commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
4853 Pte Boden John. W. Home at - N Ormesby, Mboro, town of enlistment.
3850 Pte Cooper John. Enlisted at Thirsk N Yorks.
2337 Pte Letty Robert, Angus. Home at Osborne House, Marske by the Sea, N Yorks.
Born at Saltburn Yorks and enlisted at Redcar, N Yorks. Age 22.
18th JULY. The line was subjected to intermittent mortaring which knocked the trenches about but caused
no casualties.
News arrived that Regimental Sergeant Major J.W. Wilkinson had been awarded the Military Cross.
19th JULY.
5229 Pte Olley Alfred, H. Home at 3 France St, Redcar, N Yorks, place of birth.
Enlisted at Northallerton. Killed in action. Age 19. Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
The Bn were relieved in the front line trenches by 5th Bn D.L.I. X Comany went to Entrenching
Battalion position, W Coy to Kemmel Chateau and the remainder to R.C. Farm.
Diary - The billets near R C Farm are situated in the neighbourhood of most foul and "poached" ground and are
not fit for troops. Added to which batteries surround the place and it is impossible to obtain rest.

20th to 23rd JULY. Practically the whole Battalion was supplied as working parties.
2nd Lts D Spurway, W J Hayton, J Robson, R B Abrahams and J R James joined the Unit and Capt W F Mott rejoined.
24th JULY. The Bn relieved 4th East Yorks in the Trenches.
Diary - "Trenches J3, J4 and K1 are subjected to severe Minnenwerfer bombardments and are in very low, boggy, wet
ground. The trenches between K1 and K2 do not exist having been obliterated.
25th JULY. Severe bombardment by mortars and shells. Casualties 10 other ranks wounded.
26th JULY. Quiet until 5 p.m when G and H trenches were heavily bombarded. 9.2s fired with good effect
in the evening. Casualties 1 other rank killed and 4 wounded.
2933 Pte Grierson Percy. Home at Enterpen, Hutton Rudby, Yarm, N Yorks. Born at Gayton, Yorks.
Enlisted Northallerton, Yorks. Died of wounds. Age 23. Buried at Bailleul Communal [Base Hospital] Cemetery .

4464 Pte Theobald Robert. Killed in action. Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
Robert was born in Lingdale, N Yorks in 1888, the son of Robert and Emma [nee Wild]. He grew up in Skelton with 3 siblings and 3 children from Emma's first marriage.
His mother died when he was aged 9.
In 1911 he was was working in the local ironstone mines and boarding with his step-brother at 5 Poynters Yard, Guisborough.
In 1912 he married Eliza Ellen Lynn and moved to Race Terrace, Great Ayton, where he worked in the Mine near Captain Cook's Monument.
They had two children John, born 1912 and Arthur, born 1914.
He enlisted as a volunteer in the 4th Yorks at Stokesley, some time in 1915.
The following notice was placed in the North-Eastern Daily Gazette, for the 9 August 1916 -
Theobald – On July 26th, killed in action, Pte Robt. Theobald, of Great Ayton, aged 28 years.
Sleep on, dear husband, in a far-off land,
In a grave we may never see;
But as long as life and memory last,
We will always think of thee.
Deeply mourned by his wife and children, also father, stepmother, sisters and brothers.
