21153 Pte Kirby George, Home at - 6 William St, Seaham Harbour, Co Durham. Died 11 November 19. Age 23.
George served with three different Battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment, the 7th, 10th and the 1/4th.
He must have been a Volunteer, as his Medal Card shows that he landed in France in July 1915 when the 7th Battalion first arrived.
The Green Howards Gazette for August 1916 lists him as "wounded" and he was at home to be a witness at his sister's wedding in September 1917.
At some point he was transferred to the 10th Battalion, possibly on being sent back to France.
Men were regularly transferred between Battalions as losses and the occasion demanded and again at some unknown time he was allocated to the 1/4th Battalion.
He was probably taken prisoner during one of the 3 German offensives of 1918, as many of the Battalion were.
Sadly, he died on the 11th, Armistice day. His nephew has obtained a British death certificate recording the cause as pneumonia and that he was in a German Military Hospital at Wattenscheid or Wahlscheid in the Essen/Dortmund region.
