2551 later 200604 Sgt Royle William. Born Henbury, Cheshire. Son of James and Lydia Royle of Rosedale Abbey, Pickering, N Yorks. Enlisted at Guisborough. N Yorks. 1911 census records him as a horse driver down the local Ironstone mines and residing with parents at 45 Mill St, Guisborough, N Yorks. He had married in 1917 Margaret Cresswell of 10 Park St, Middlesbrough. Killed in action, age 26. He had been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. The London Gazette of 24 November 1916 recorded this. The acts of gallantry were most likely performed in September 1916 when the Battalion had been ordered to attack the German trenches near High Wood/Martinpuich and lost a great many men.

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led his men with great courage and determination, himself killing and wounding eight of the enemy. Later, on four occasions he rescued wounded men under very heavy fire.

For an advance of a few miles the Germans paid a high price and it was this repeated loss of their best and irreplaceable storm-troopers that was to be a major factor in deciding the outcome of the War.
