The Thiepval Memorial.
Thiepval is a French village to the North of Albert and due West of the village of Courcelettes.
It was one of Haig's objectives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July.
It was not captured until the end of September, by which time enormous losses had been sustained.

16th SEPTEMBER. Holding on.
The following 4 men who died this day are all commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

2Lt Walter James Hayton. Killed in action "while acting as Casualty Officer". Age 23. Home at "Falconhurst", Windsor Rd., Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Son of James and Eliza Jane Hayton. In 1911 at age 18 he was a Commercial Clerk to an Iron ore merchant.
4877 Pte Booth Albert. Enlisted at Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Killed in action
201820 Pte Mee Albert. Home at 25 Redcar Rd, Dunsdale, Guisborough, N Yorks, place of enlistment. Died. Age 28.
201266 Pte Jones Albert, Ernest. Home at - 9 Yeoman St, Redcar, N Yorks. Born and enlisted at Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Died. Age 19.
4775 Pte Allan Michael, Edward. Born at Wrelton. Enlisted at Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Died of wounds. Left a wife and 3 children living in Middlesbrough and had 3 brothers serving in the Army.
On local War Memorial as All[e]n and on CWGC site as All[a]n.
In November 1903 he was a Farm Labourer and enlisted in the 19th Yorkshire Regiment. After 26 days his Father bought him out for £10.
Buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension.

3280 Pte Jackson William, Ernest. Home at - 54 High St, Loftus, N Yorks, place of enlistment. Died of wounds. Age 23. Buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension.

The Thiepval Memorial.
The Memorial bears the names of 72,000 men of the British and S African forces who died in the area and have no known grave.
Over 90% gave their lives between July and November 1916.

2954 Pte Jones Enoch. Home at - Boosbeck N Yorks, enlisted at Skelton in Cleveland, N Yorks. Died of wounds. Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt
2722 Pte Willow Horace. Home at 24 Yeoman St, Skelton in Cleveland, N Yorks. Enlisted at Northallerton. Killed in action. At the census of 1901, Horace, aged 14, was living at 24 Yeoman St, Skelton in Cleveland and working as a Jeweller's errand boy. His father, who came from Shoreditch London worked as an Ironstone miner. His mother came from Maidstone, Kent. He had an elder brother, Alfred 20, a grocer and an elder sister, Gertrude 16, a "day servant". Two younger sisters were Florence aged 10 and May 8.
He is buried at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval.
17th SEPTEMBER. At 1 p.m 150th Bde Commander ordered 5th D.L.I. with bombing squads from the 4th and 5th Yorks to attack and occupy Prue and Starfish Trenches as far as the Crescent. This was accomplished although the 5th Yorks did not appear in time.
